Throughout his creative life, three composers were always on Bernstein’s mind. In this final session, we recognize Leonard Bernstein, the composer, paying tribute to the musical masters he held in highest esteem.

About Saul Lilienstein

A former student of Leonard Bernstein, Saul Lilienstein holds B.A. and M.S. degrees in music from Queens College, NY. He has served as Director of the Handel Choir of Baltimore and the Harford Choral Society and, for many years, as Artistic Director and Conductor of Maryland’s Harford Opera Theatre and then of Operetta Renaissance in Baltimore, conducting and producing over fifty operas.

A highly- regarded Professor of Music, his is a familiar voice at the Smithsonian Institution, Johns Hopkins University in Rockville, the Kennedy Center, Washington National Opera, and at music symposiums in New York, California, Florida, and Ohio. Lilienstein’s lecture topics range from opera to Bach and Beethoven and from Gypsy music and immigrant cultures to The Beatles. He has now completed over 90 highly acclaimed CDs for the Washington National Opera analyzing the repertoire in the most extensive series of its kind in the English language. His articles on music have appeared in newspapers and periodicals throughout the country. In 2005, the Wagner Society of Washington, DC bestowed the Society’s Award for “uncommon contributions” upon Lilienstein, who is honored to join past recipients Placido Domingo, Thomas Stewart, Evelyn Lear and Heinz Fricke.
