A grant from AARP helped Van Ness Main Street create an intergenerational project to bring the many of residents of Van Ness together.
Through community meetings and gatherings, we created the Van Ness Social Club, a conceptual town square allowing everyone in the neighborhood to have opportunities to gather and socialize. The concept created an opportunity for older residents and millennials to work directly with an artist to create a new space with people of all ages.
The Van Ness Social Club created a space and an opportunity for all residents in Van Ness to interact with individuals that they normally do not interact on a daily basis. Participants took pride in creating a space for entire community to use. A “third place” was created.
The culminating event of the first Van Ness Social Club created a temporary town square. The plaza was reimagined with massive public art murals, landscaping, seating, and activities that create that “third space” where people want to meet, get to know their neighbors, and volunteer.
Van Ness Main Street is planning more Van Ness Social Club activities including house parties and events at the 4250 Plaza. Check back for updates.
